SERVPRO can mitigate flood damage to Seminole homes

Seminole, FL is named after the Seminole Indians who originally inhabited the area. Between the 1840s and 1860s, white settlers arrived and began to settle the location.

A Local Home Becomes a Community Hub

In 1879 a homestead was built by Albert and Dell Meares. Along with their ten children, they developed a sense of community with their neighbors. Their home doubled as the local post office, and folks would come in to pick up their mail. They enjoyed visiting and trading news while waiting for the mail cart to come from Clearwater. Today this is Seminole City Park, and the lake in the middle of the park is named after the Meares.

A Formal Post Office & a Church

In 1886 a Post Office building was established at Bay Pines Triangle. Five years later, Marvin’s Church was founded. It was the first church in the Seminole area. In 1921 a hurricane destroyed the building, but the members rebuilt the church in 1924. Later it became the Seminole United Methodist Church.

The City Expands

By 1894 a thriving community had formed. This year brought the first school to town. The Seminole Cemetery and Seminole Civic Association were established that year as well. The Lone Pilgrim Baptist Cemetery was added in 1896.

Travel Becomes Easier in Seminole

In 1911 Seminole is connected to St. Petersburg via the first bridge to be built. It spans across Long Bayou. In 1914 the Tampa & Golf Coast Railway started service to other areas of Pinellas County.
